The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

ARRA

Stimulating Garland’s Economy

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (“ARRA” or “Recovery Act”) was signed into law on Feb. 17, 2009, by President Barack Obama. It is intended to jumpstart the economy as the nation tries to recover from a global economic downturn. The Federal government will make money available to states, cities, non-profits and other agencies and organizations. Funding will come through many different processes and for a wide variety of goals and priorities.

What it means for Garland

Because the effects of the downturn are being felt locally, the City of Garland will pursue various funding opportunities made possible through ARRA that will assist our local economy.  The City of Garland plays an important role in creating jobs and new economic opportunity through ARRA by contracting for construction and consulting activities, purchasing goods and services and hiring full-time or temporary employees. Additionally, the City will help its residents overcome hardships brought upon by the recession through enhanced programs and services.  The City is pursuing many opportunities through a wide variety of initiatives, ranging from infrastructure improvements to public safety.

What is the City of Garland doing?

Nearly 200 separate programs are included in ARRA. Of those, City staff has identified a number of programs from which either the City or another Garland organization may be eligible to receive formula-driven funding or apply for competitive grants. To date, Garland has won over $22 million in funds for projects. Click here to view the revised list of grant opportunities for which Garland has secured funding.

Track Our Progress

The City shares the Federal government’s commitment to accountability and transparency for this process of reinvigorating Garland’s economy.  Each quarter the City will report on the progress of putting to work ARRA funds for each awarded grant.  Click here to view a snapshot of our progress.
